DAFTAR JUARA Liga Inggris (1888-2012)

Sukses Manchester United setelah merebut gelar Liga Primer Inggris ke-19 akhirnya berhasil dihambat Manchester City persis pada pekan penutup kompetisi, Minggu (13/5).

Keberhasilan City merebut gelar keempat mereka sepanjang sejarah berlangsung dramatis. Di tengah tekanan karena United sudah memimpin 1-0 di markas Sunderland, City malah tertinggal 2-1 dari Queens Park Rangers sejak awal babak kedua hingga pertandingan memasuki tambahan waktu.

Berkat keunggulan jumlah pemain setelah kartu merah kapten QPR Joey Barton serta gempuran tanpa henti, City akhirnya memetik dua gol beruntun melalui Edin Dzeko dan Sergio Aguero. Skor berubah 3-2 sekaligus membatalkan pesta United. Perayaan yang tadinya disiapkan di Stadium of Light pun dalam sekejap berpindah ke Etihad.

Perebutan gelar juara Liga Primer musim ini berjalan menarik karena dua saingan utama, City dan United, susul menyusul memasuki bulan-bulan penentuan. Awalnya City memimpin jauh sampai pelan-pelan disusul United. Bahkan sang juara bertahan sempat unggul delapan poin hingga akhirnya kembali didekati City. Puncaknya, City memenangi laga derby 1-0 pada pekan ke-36. Dengan dua laga tersisa, City tak lagi melakukan kesalahan dan berhasil merebut gelar juara liga, meski dengan memaksa para pendukungnya senam jantung.
